Frequently Asked Questions
Features and design
Does your vehicle do regenerative braking?
Yes! Coming to a stop or going down a hill means we can take that extra forward motion and charge the battery.
Are you going to add solar panels?
Absolutely! Imagine being able to charge up anywhere, anytime the sun is up.
How far does it go on a single charge?
We are aiming for a minimum of 30km. However, if you pedal harder or have the solar panel installed, you could potentially go much farther!
How fast does it go?
Because it's classified as an e-bike, the speed will be limited to 32km/h (20 mph) in most North American jurisdictions, and 25km/h in Europe. Be sure to check your local laws.
Sound slow? The speed of traffic in many of our major cities can average just 15km/h (10mph), cars included. Check out Gridlock May Not Be Constant, but Slow Going Is Here to Stay
from the New York Times
Can I carry a passenger? How about a baby seat?
We are designing our first product to have seating for two people; what you see now is just our first prototype!
Safety and comfort
How will I stay protected from the elements?
Our first product will be designed with a partially open shell that shields you from wind, rain and snow while still allowing airflow to keep you cool while you ride.
Will I be safe in your vehicle?
We're designing our vehicle for safety by making use of the latest in cycling safety research. If you'd like to know more, check out the City of Toronto's study on car-bike collisions
How do I use this in winter?
We're from Toronto, Canada, and while some of our neighbours to the north might say that's still a t-shirt climate, we're year-round cyclists who know what it means to be cold. We're designing our vehicle to make winter travel easier. Luckily for us, we can stand on the shoulders of the people who have thought hard about these problems. If you want to know more, you could start with the book Bicycling Science
by David Gordon Wilson.
What stops someone from stealing it?
Because it's electronically controlled, it's impossible to pedal our vehicle away unless you're the owner. Unlike a bicycle, it's a little big to carry away, and thanks to our security-focused approach to the design, you won't see anyone "hot-wiring" one anytime soon. We've also got a few ideas in mind that we're not quite ready to show off yet, so stay tuned!
How much will this cost?
While we can't commit to a price just yet, we are working hard to cram all the great things about driving a car into something that's priced like a good bicycle.
What sort of license/insurance do I need?
Because it's legally classified as an electric bicycle (e-bike) in many jurisdictions, you don't need a driver's license, or insurance.
How is this better than a typical e-bike?
We offer something that is more comfortable, safe, feature-filled than e-bikes and is designed for the kind of weather you'd find in Canada. You also don't need to know how to ride a bicycle to use our product.
Why don't I jut get a golf cart?
A golf cart probably wouldn't work well in the winter (and, unsurprisingly, their batteries aren't typically designed for the cold). Besides, a golf cart is probably not street-legal in your jurisdiction.
